We spent our weekend roasting lamb at a music and food festival with a friend. The event actually started Friday evening with a s’mores party for the festival crowd. They had several firepits going down by the lake beach. Besides the traditional bagged marshmallows, Hershey chocolate and graham crackers, the pastry chef baked cookies, made assorted chocolate melts and three kinds of marshmallows. I’m so going to try this at home some day!

People still occasionally drive up our driveway or hop the locked fence to see what’s behind the gate and the keep out signs. It’s pretty obvious that 1. it’s someone’s home and 2. no, you’re not welcome to come snoop. We had someone selling meat stop by yesterday. Did you not see the pasture full of animals and the no trespassing sign? If you’re making a delivery or have been invited, come on. Otherwise, not so much. I think we need one of those “Trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot twice” signs.
Student Work

I’ve been teaching pottery workshops in our studio, focusing on small items such as buttons, pendants, magnets and ring dishes. They texture the clay then use cookie cutters to get the shapes they want. I’m so pleased with the treasures they’ve been making! I’ve had a few repeat students, I think folks are starting to think about Christmas gifts.

We’ve been harvesting cucumbers for a few days now, which means I need to break out the canning jars and start making pickles! I never start enough cucumber plants to satisfy my family’s dill pickle habit. I wish I’d started twice as many this year.

For Father’s Day dinner I made crab cakes with remoulade and lemon yogurt sauces, steamed lobster, caesar salad with homemade sourdough croutons and duck fat fries. Cause that’s how I roll. 🙂
Alice In Wonderland Spool

I am co-organizing an altered spool theme swap on craftster.org. It means you receive a partner’s information along with five different themes they enjoy. You choose a theme and decorate a spool to match. My partner had Alice in Wonderland near the top of her list so I was inspired to make a tea party. The base of the spool has a white rabbit, a ‘drink me’ potion, an “I’m Late” pendant, Alice playing cards, a key and keyhole and lots of flowers and ladybugs. Alice holds a timepiece on the top of the spool. The ‘Curioser and Curioser’ locket opens up to display the Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit. I made the cake and macaroons out of polymer clay. She was a lot of fun to make and I got to give it to my partner in person when she came for brunch this morning. Fun times!

Jack cools off in a waterer after working sheep, Lizzie while Lizzie congratulates him on being the master of the flock. She finds him fascinating and would love it if he’d stay and play with her all day. He’s very tolerant of her exuberance. Good boy.

We had the absolute honor of cooking for a few of the chefs who helped prepare the food for Maya Angelou’s funeral last weekend. Since Art Smith tweeted #BestShrimpSalad with regards to one of the side dishes we prepared, I suppose I should share the recipe. 🙂
Peel and devein 1.5 pounds of shrimp. Saute them in olive oil in batches just until cooked. Be careful not to overcook them. Set aside.
Boil 4 ears of corn. Slice the kernels off the cob.
Deseed and chop 2 yellow bell peppers, chop 2 ribs of celery.
Peel and segment 3-4 navel oranges.
In a large bowl, add a pint of whole cherry tomatoes and all of the ingredients above.
Mix the following to dress the salad: Juice of 3 lemons, 1/3 cup of olive oil, 1-2 teaspoons of dijon mustard, 3-4 minced cloves of garlic, 6 splashes of tabasco sauce, salt and pepper. Whisk it all together and taste, make adjustments to suite your palate before dressing the salad.
Just before serving, add fresh chopped basil and a diced avocado or two.
