Harry Potter Advent Calendar

The girls loved our advent calendar when they were children.   Since they are off on their own, I made advent calendars for their homes this year.  Tracy and Brad received the zombie countdown calendar I posted a few months back.  Claire is a lover of all things Harry Potter so that’s the direction I went with hers.  Each drawer contains a candy treat and something to add to a little potions cabinet.  Click on the photos if you want to see them full screen.

Fun, If You’re A Dog

Mouser JackJack’s favorite pastime when left to entertain himself is searching for field mice in the pumpkin patch.   Followed by a dip in the pond.  I’ve never seen him catch one, I just think he saw one there once and wants to play with it.  He certainly keeps himself busy.

The Ladies

10Our sheep flock together when Jack’s in the pasture.   Safety in numbers.  They each have a distinct personality.  Someone jumped our locked gate this morning and walked our half mile driveway to ask if we sell our sheep.  Umm… no and didn’t you see the no trespassing sign?

He Used To Be Mine

Binx Binx was our very first sphynx cat.  We got him from a breeder in Montana when our daughter Tracy was in 6th grade.  She’s all grown up now and Binx lives with her and her husband in Florida.  She sent me this photo of Binx checking out their very first live Christmas tree.  He’ll be 19 years old in a few weeks.  Merry Christmas, little old man!

Grow Your Own

When we bought this property seven years ago, we planted a few things in anticipation of being able to enjoy them years down the road.  The grapevines are long gone and we’ve yet to enjoy an apple, peach, cherry, apricot or persimmon.  But… a few of the 75 spruce seedlings we dispersed across our property survived and we harvested our very own Christmas tree this year.  🙂  We planted about half of them in the pasture without thinking ahead.  Those were doing pretty well until our goats arrived.

Decoys Evidently Work

Fishfeeding rings are situated at the deep end of our pond.  They’re like giant hula hoops.  The idea is you throw pelletized fish food into the rings.  It floats on top of the water and the fish learn to eat there.  It’s supposed to become their hangout place and are therefore make them easy to catch.  The rings came with the farm, we don’t use them.  We just throw fish food off of the dock.  The rings have captured a freefloating duck decoy one of our friends launched on our pond.  We get an occasional duck visitor to the pond.  They don’t stay long, I guess they’re just passing through.  This little visitor on the left found his fake friend on the right.  How disappointing it must have been.

Cornbread Stuffing

Here’s my holiday stuffing recipe.  What I actually do is buy a bag of Pepperidge Farm cornbread stuffing and follow the recipe on the back, with lots of add ins.  The bag calls for melted butter and chicken broth.  I crumble, fry and drain a package of sausage and add it to the stuffing mix.  I saute shallots, celery and mushrooms in the amount of butter the package calls for and add it along with a package of raw cranberries and a huge diced apple.  The chicken broth gets added at the end and walnuts go into half.  It’s baked at 350 for 30-40 minutes.  If these ingredients sound good to you, the finished dish will be heaven!

My Bottle Baby

Summer has grown up to be a lovely doe.  She was Hermione’s third triplet.  She was very weak when she was born and her mom ignored her, that’s how I became her mom.  She still runs to me when I call her.   🙂

Doggy Jail

Jack isn’t allowed to help on poultry processing day, but he spends the day out with us.  We put him in the small pasture where he looks forlorn until he figures out he can hunt mice, play in the leaves, drag sticks around and basically do fun dog stuff while waiting to join the family.

Happy Thanksgiving!
