For Father’s Day dinner I made crab cakes with remoulade and lemon yogurt sauces, steamed lobster, caesar salad with homemade sourdough croutons and duck fat fries. Cause that’s how I roll. 🙂

Alice In Wonderland Spool

I am co-organizing an altered spool theme swap on craftster.org. It means you receive a partner’s information along with five different themes they enjoy. You choose a theme and decorate a spool to match. My partner had Alice in Wonderland near the top of her list so I was inspired to make a tea party. The base of the spool has a white rabbit, a ‘drink me’ potion, an “I’m Late” pendant, Alice playing cards, a key and keyhole and lots of flowers and ladybugs. Alice holds a timepiece on the top of the spool. The ‘Curioser and Curioser’ locket opens up to display the Cheshire Cat and White Rabbit. I made the cake and macaroons out of polymer clay. She was a lot of fun to make and I got to give it to my partner in person when she came for brunch this morning. Fun times!

Jack cools off in a waterer after working sheep, Lizzie while Lizzie congratulates him on being the master of the flock. She finds him fascinating and would love it if he’d stay and play with her all day. He’s very tolerant of her exuberance. Good boy.

We had the absolute honor of cooking for a few of the chefs who helped prepare the food for Maya Angelou’s funeral last weekend. Since Art Smith tweeted #BestShrimpSalad with regards to one of the side dishes we prepared, I suppose I should share the recipe. 🙂
Peel and devein 1.5 pounds of shrimp. Saute them in olive oil in batches just until cooked. Be careful not to overcook them. Set aside.
Boil 4 ears of corn. Slice the kernels off the cob.
Deseed and chop 2 yellow bell peppers, chop 2 ribs of celery.
Peel and segment 3-4 navel oranges.
In a large bowl, add a pint of whole cherry tomatoes and all of the ingredients above.
Mix the following to dress the salad: Juice of 3 lemons, 1/3 cup of olive oil, 1-2 teaspoons of dijon mustard, 3-4 minced cloves of garlic, 6 splashes of tabasco sauce, salt and pepper. Whisk it all together and taste, make adjustments to suite your palate before dressing the salad.
Just before serving, add fresh chopped basil and a diced avocado or two.

Annoying

Lizzie, who is almost as big as Jack, bothers the snot out of him when he’s in the pasture. He’s a very good sport about it and treats her like an annoying little sister. It takes two of us to work Jack with the sheep. One to work Jack and one to distract Lizzie. 🙂
A Good Sit

Lizzie has the ‘sit’ command down nicely. We work with her twice a day. She’s almost to the point where she won’t jump on us anymore which is great because she’ll probably grow up to be about 120 pounds. We also practice walking her on a lead to make sure we’re able to get her to the vet. They are situated on a very busy road so her first visit was challenging. Farm dogs aren’t used to road noise. She had to be carried into the office. That won’t work much longer.
Growing Peanuts

More accurately, growing peanut. Of all the peanuts we planted this year, this is the only plant that came up. This was a first time endeavor, and probably our last. I mean… we’re attempting to grow Virginia peanuts in Virginia. Anything that fussy to grow is too fussy for me! Dang. I wanted boiled peanuts.

Lizzie has selected the biggest tree in our pasture to pass her time so that’s where we’ve been feeding her. Plus, her bathtub is there. What more could a giant puppy want?
With A Little Help From My Friend

Actually a lot of help. My friend Lora came over to teach me how to frost a cake on Friday. She is a pastry master (obviously). It’s as delicious as it is beautiful, it’s even torted inside. I learned so many new skills that I am now officially dangerous.
